Please read (or listen to) today’s post in its entirety, down to the last sentence. Thank you.
Six-hundred and seventy three days ago (July 10, 2023 to be more exact) I hit publish on this thing called Substack and shared a quote that encouraged me— “the best work is the work that you are excited about!”
This work here, continues to fall into that category. When I started this substack, I knew I wanted to write more and share through writing to a generation that seems to be falling out of love with reading. Short story in the footnotes here.1
When it came to starting this substack, I didn’t waste time, as I shared here. I didn’t overthink. I came up with a name that meant something to me and explained who I was writing for—For Those on the Journey. That encompasses me and you. If you haven’t read this post from July 15, 2023 click here to read it.
Since 2023, I have written about my journey, what I’ve learned, principles and truths that shape how I view the world, and more.
The tie that binds.
If you didn’t know, in my day-to-day work I am a corporate coach helping companies by training and coaching their employees (typically first through fifth years) on how to steward their time well. I deeply enjoy this work and have met some of the most interesting and kind, young (and older) professionals.
I have spoken to and trained people in professions that are outside of my own expertise and many within my former career as an attorney in private practice. What makes my work universal is that humans tend to struggle with time because humans tend to struggle with focus, pruning, and understanding/honoring the season they’re in.
In addition to coaching and speaking, I also enjoy writing on my second substack, Invitation to Abide. There I wrote a short 14-day study and one of the common themes I write about is the importance of the daily, taking life one today at a time®.
And in my company, Best Today®, one today at a time® is our trademarked phrase that helps to explain my approach to planning, living, learning, and life.
And it recently hit me! In all aspects of my work, the through line is ONE TODAY AT A TIME®. This methodology, this encouragement, this guidance, this wisdom bears a truth for all, and most especially, for those on the journey.
In all aspects of my work, the through line is ONE TODAY AT A TIME®.
It has been a challenge feeling divided—am I a coach, writer, business owner, speaker, what am I professionally? Yes, I’m all of the above. But most importantly, WHO I am is a woman who loves people and has been charged to love people through sharing truth, being joy, and encouraging others to live truthfully and joyfully one today at a time®.
This phrase does not make me feel split into pieces and battling which part of my work to highlight or define myself as in order to be understood. One Today at a Time® unifies the work of my hands and heart.
I knew it was time for For those on the Journey to bear a new name—One Today at a Time®. I’ve created a mini studio in my office where I want to not only continue to write more but also create some face to face interaction with you through video.
This is the image on the home page of One Today at a Time®. You see that little tortoise on the road? She is me. She is you. What I love about the story of the tortoise and the hare is the tortoise’s pace. The confidence to move intentionally but without unnecessary haste. One step at a time. No need to insert herself into the future or the past, but remain ever present focused on the step she is in.
That is my hope for you and everything that I share here is rooted in that. One today at a time®. How does that differ from the popular phrase “one day at a time”? The TODAY grounds you into the present, in the now, in understanding that it is an unnecessary burden to cast yourself into the past that you cannot change, and it is anxiety-driven to cast yourself into a future that does not yet exist and is dependent on the choices you make today. But what a wise use of time to be present today. To live life one TODAY at a time®.
So this space continues to be for us. For you. For me. As we continue on the journey, one today at a time®.
I’m really excited!
Last weekend I went to a furniture store looking for bookcases for my office. The man told me, “we don’t keep bookcases in anymore, no one seems to be looking for them in store.” And I thought about that. Who knew the lack of reading would trickle down to what furniture sits in stores. In our home, we love books, we love reading, we visit the library weekly and all of us from the 6 year old to the 43 year old read daily. If you’re reading this, thank you for continuing to be a reader!
